Netgear’s Arlo Pro 2 ~ capable home camera system

Home security systems are expensive and require expert installations and monitoring. Smart home cameras now have changed the scenario. They are cheaper and can be easily installed and monitored from a smartphone or a tablet. The Netgear Arlo Pro 2 is one such smart home camera which is HD, wireless and works both indoors and outdoors. It also features free cloud storage for a week, two-way audio, a rechargeable 2440 mAh battery that lasts six months, and a 130-degree field of view. It also includes AC power support.

The Arlo Pro 2 measures 3.1 by 1.9 by 2.8 inches (HWD), weighs 4.8 ounces, and has a glossy white housing that meets IP65 waterproof standards. A magnet embedded in the rear of the enclosure allows one to attach the camera to the round metal mounts or any metal surface, or can be placed on any flat area. There's a Sync button on the top of the camera, along with a button that opens the battery compartment at the rear.

The Arlo Pro 2 uses a rechargeable battery pack that is rated to last up to six months. To charge the battery, bring the camera inside and plug the included charging adapter into the power jack located just below the battery compartment.
It offers 130-degree field of view and speaker and microphone array for two-way audio communication. Six infrared LEDs provide up to 25 feet of night vision in black and white, and the camera offers an 8X digital zoom. The base station measures 5.0 by 6.9 by 2.3 inches (HWD) and has LED indicators for power, internet, and camera connectivity, and a Sync button for pairing cameras on top. Around back are two USB ports for attaching USB drives, a LAN port, a reset button, a power button, and a power jack. It is powered by a 900MHz CPU and contains 802.11n Wi-Fi circuitry and a 100dB siren that can be set to go off when the camera's motion or sound sensors are triggered.

The camera system is sold with two cameras and a base station that plugs into the router to manage the connections. (It can also be plugged to an external hard drive to the base station to back up the recordings locally) Once the camera is synced  with the base station, the camera can easily be mounted on any wall with a screwdriver and the included magnetized mount in about five minutes.

The cameras can be managed through the Arlo’s app, which allows one to schedule times for the cameras to run, or set it up to activate once one leaves the house. If motion or sound is detected, Arlo will send a push notification to alert, and one can view the footage within the app. The Pro 2’s upgraded resolution delivers sharp images, even when using the 8x digital zoom. The night vision illuminates to about 12 feet distance before falling off into shadow.

The other three modes—Schedule, Geofencing and Disarm—automatically arm the camera based on time or your location or turn off detection altogether. One can create their own modes, too, using in-app prompts and assign them to specific cameras. The new motion zone feature is a welcome addition to the Arlo app, as it helps fine-tune the accuracy of detection alerts. One  can create up to three zones by placing a bounding box over the parts of the room you want to monitor, such as doors and windows. The camera will alert you only to activity in those areas and ignore it in others. The camera must be plugged into a power outlet to enable this feature.

The Netgear Arlo Pro 2, with its unique indoor/outdoor flexibility and easy-to-use companion app is hugely recommended for anyone looking for an option to keep an eye on their home when one is away.
